W Scottsdale, It’s Not Your Grandma’s Vacation Spot

Last weekend, we went to Scottsdale, Arizona. A 5 hour drive from Los Angeles that reminded me of the drive to Las Vegas. We arrived at our hotel, W Scottsdale, at 8pm. I felt like I was walking into a swanky night club.

The place was ultra modern and there were lots of people milling around in the lounge. There was a gentleman making sure you had the right attire to get upstairs to the pool and outdoor area and the hotel check-in area looked more like a hostess stand.

After we checked in, we headed to our room, a “Fabulous” Balcony Suite. We received an upgrade thanks to booking through Carefree Vacations and a welcome amenity of cheese, crackers, fruit and a bottle of wine. We also received a $40 per day breakfast credit which came in handy since breakfast starts at $16 per plate.

The room was chic and modern. It was hip and comfortable but a little less functional than I had imagined. There was a nice flat screen computer with free internet, a mounted flat screen TV and a radio with A/V output to hook up your iPod or other music device.

The bed was extremely comfortable, so comfortable in fact we asked what type of mattress it was. I didn’t feel the bed moved when my husband rolled over and I sank into the mattress and sleep heaven. We were told it’s a special Sealy mattress made for W hotels. The closet and furniture looked to be out of Ikea, even though it’s probably more expensive than that.

The bathroom door was more like a shower door, glass and without a seal. There is also no ceiling fan. This is not the my idea of the perfect romantic or first weekend getaway. You can hear everything…

The bath amenities were from their spa, Bliss, and were excellent! The spa looked more like a Bath & Body Works store than a relaxing spa atmosphere, although we didn’t go in for a treatment.

Our balcony was huge! It overlooked the Zen garden and was really nice because we were able to hear the music and have a drink as well as enjoy the company of my husband.

The common areas were immaculate and there was great attention to detail including changing out the welcome mats in the elevators 3 times per day. There was a mat that said “Good Morning”, “Good Afternoon”, and “Good Evening”.

There is only 1 restaurant at the hotel, Sushi Roku, which is beautiful. It doubles as a bar at night and serves breakfast in the morning. The W Scottsdale offers complimentary shuttle to nearby locations in a beautiful Acura.

The hotel is located within walking distance to the main shopping area where there are tons of shops, restaurants and so many nightclubs! I think this is the perfect vacation for those celebrating a bachelor or bachelorette party that don’t want to go to Vegas. The modern hotel made me feel like I was in a club, plus the location was excellent for night clubbing or bar hopping.

The W Scottsdale is very close to the San Francisco Giants’ Spring Training stadium and only a 20 minute drive to downtown Phoenix. It was a nice hotel, for the right person. If you like to be in the know, this is the place for you!
