In the 6<sup>th</sup> century, the area was dominated by a Christian necropolis. The first monastery was raised here in the 11<sup>th</sup> century. In the 13<sup>th</sup> century it was a busy tradesmen&rsquo;s district and Passeig del Born was Barcelona&rsquo; s main square from the 13<sup>th</sup> to the 18<sup>th</sup> centuries. Jousting tournaments, executions and other public entertainments took place in the Middle Ages.<br />&#x0D; The Santa Mar&iacute;a del Mar church is one of the best examples of 14th century Catalonian Gothic architecture. It is the work of the architect Berenguer de Montagut and was the templeof the shipowners and merchants in Gothic Barcelona. Seen from the outside, its appearance is solid and robust, dominated by straight lines. The inside consists of three naves, an ambulatory and is without a transept. The amazing height of the central nave with its majestic octagonal columns stands out.<br />&#x0D; The&nbsp;Palau de la M&uacute;sica Catalana&nbsp;was built between 1905 and 1908 by the architect&nbsp;Llu&iacute;s Dom&egrave;nech i Montaner&nbsp;and it is an architectural jewel of Catalan Art Nouveau, the only concert venue in this style to be listed as a&nbsp;World Heritage Site by&nbsp;UNESCO&nbsp;(4th December 1997), which today represents an essential landmark in the cultural and social life of Catalonia.<br />&#x0D; &nbsp;<br />&#x0D; The Santa Caterina market building was constructed on the former site of the&nbsp;Convent of Santa Caterina, from which it takes its name.&nbsp;The refurbishment of Barcelona&rsquo;s first covered food market by the architectural practice of Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue was completed in 2005. The food market&nbsp;revealed a gleaming, undulating and brightly coloured roof designed to be seen from the air. The roof is attached to the building by a wooden structure, and a vast mosaic of coloured ceramic pieces, representing fruit and vegetables, boldly breaks with the traditional look of a market.<br />&#x0D; &nbsp;<br />&#x0D; The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is a clear example of the ties Pablo Picasso had with the city of Barcelona. Here, he not only received sound academic training but also the artistic effervescence that lit the fire and opened the doors towards modernism.<br />&#x0D; Inaugurated in 1963, the Picasso Museum not only owns the most important and exhaustive collection of the works of art from Pablo Picasso&#39;s youth and period of training but also holds temporary exhibitions of other artists related to this artistic figurehead.</span></span></p>&#x0D; &#x0D; <p></p>&#x0D;

Narrow streets, with quiet squares and attractive corners, are home to an abundant collection of Gothic buildings, both civil and religious. Surrounding Barcelona&#39;s impressive gothic Cathedral, medieval palaces emerge, such as Casa dels Canonges and Casa d&acute;Ardiaca. The Pla&ccedil;a del Rei brings together another labyrinth of marvellous buildings, such as the Palau Reial Mayor and the Chapel of Santa &Aacute;gata. The Pla&ccedil;a Sant Jaume holds the Palau de la Generalitat (headquarters of the Catalan government) and the City Hall.<br />&#x0D; <span>The oldest</span>&nbsp;<span>synagogue in Europe dating back to 1306 is in Barcelona. </span>The site of the older Call of Barcelona &ndash;the Call Major&ndash; is located between l&rsquo;Arc de Santamon, Call, Bisbe and Sant Sever Streets. Situated 45 kilometres Northwest of Barcelona, the monastery was founded by Abbot Oliba in 1025, although there is evidence that in the year 888, there was a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God. In the 12th century the Romanesque church was built and in 1223, the first European School for child singers. Leon XIII declared the Virgin of Montserrat patron saint of Catalunya. In the year 1500, San Ignacio de Loyola arrived as a pilgrim. The library has over 300,000 books. We have a choir school. There is a museum with paintings by artists such as El Greco, Picasso and Dal&iacute;. There are even treasures from ancient Egypt, amongst which one of the most outstanding treasures is a mummy. Montserrat lost most of its heritage during the Napoleonic Wars. However, since the Monastery was restored in 1844, the Museum has formed a valuable collection of artistic works. Private donations, from the artists themselves, and the sensitivity of the monks have made this possible. The Museum is divided into different sections organised in an instructive way. There are 13th century documents that prove that a choir school already existed in Montserrat. It was a religious and musical institution, made up by choir boys. </font></p>&#x0D;

In 1160 they were already inhabiting the Call, the name given to Jewish quarters in Catalonia. It is a name coming from Latin callis (street), which would become carrer in Catalan and calle in Spanish. In medieval times, call meant a &quot;group of narrow streets&quot;. These paved, narrow and labirynth streets constituted the urban space where most of the Jewish population in Girona settled in the 13th and 14th centuries. The community&#39;s main body was formed by tradesmen and craftsmen: tailors, shoemakers, weavers, barbers, furriers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths and silversmiths opened their workshops in the Call&acute;s narrow streets. Others devoted their time to medicine and astrology, while those who had the means became money-lenders. In Girona there is The Bonastruc &ccedil;a Porta Centre, located in the emblematic building that housed the last synagogue of Girona, is currently the home of the Museum of the History of the Jews and the Nahmanides Institute for Jewish studies.</font></p>&#x0D; &nbsp;&#x0D; &#x0D; <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Not far from here, a Capuchin convent houses the Arab Baths, where we should point out a pavilion built on eight fine columns and crowned by an octagonal cupola.</font></p>&#x0D;

The artist worked on it until his death. Work to complete this great church still continues today. The first architect to work on this project planned a Neogothic building. However, following his death, Gaud&iacute; took over, respecting the original layout of the work, but soon leaving the mark of his personality and way of doing things. He finished only the chapel of San Jos&eacute;, the crypt and the door of El Nacimiento. The fa&ccedil;ades and the entire exterior show extensive decorative elements in bright colours. After being used as a public hospital for a century, its newly refurbished pavilions shine again in all their splendour. A visit to this exceptional architectural ensemble is a unique experience. This is Europe&rsquo;s foremost art-nouveau complex and an icon among Barcelona&rsquo;s dazzling array of landmarks which embodies the city&rsquo;s innovative spirit. It was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1997 and now its architectural and artistic values have been brought to a wider audience with the new use of its pavilions.</span></span></span><br />&#x0D; <br />&#x0D; &nbsp;

Works by Gaud&iacute;, such Casa Mil&agrave; &ldquo;La Pedrera&rdquo;, Casa Batll&oacute; and the temple of the Sagrada Familia (the Holy Family); Casa Amatller of Josep Puig i Cadalfach and Casa Lle&oacute;-Morera of Llu&iacute;s Dom&egrave;nech I Montaner are just a few of the many modernist gems treasured by the city.<br />&#x0D; &nbsp;<br />&#x0D; Casa Mil&agrave;, better known as La Pedrera (Catalan for &ldquo;The Quarry&rdquo;), is a building designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaud&iacute;. It is located in the Eixample district of Barcelona. It was built for Roger Segimon de Mil&agrave;. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site &ldquo;Works of Antoni Gaud&iacute;&rdquo;. The building does not have any straight lines. Most people consider it magnificent and overwhelming; some say it is like waves of lava or a sand-dune. This building seems to break our understanding of conventional architecture. The most astonishing part is the roof with an almost lunar appearance and dreamlike landscape.<br />&#x0D; Casa Batll&oacute; building looks very remarkable, like everything Gaudi designed, only identifiable as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, is rather astonishing with tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. It seems that the goal of the designer was to avoid straight lines completely. Much of the fa&ccedil;ade is decorated with a mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles (trencad&iacute;s) that starts in shades of golden orange moving into greenish blues. The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur.<br />&#x0D; The Museu de Modernisme Catal&agrave; is housed in a centrally located modernista building designed by the architect Enric Sagnier.n The top floor of the MMCat showcases the furniture and decorative arts and has a room dedicated to Antoni Gaudi. The ground floor displays paintings, sculptures and stained glass.</span></span>

Every day aboard Queen Mary 2 is an invitation to experience exciting opportunities. There's always something new to try, from ballroom dance classes to Illuminations, the only planetarium at sea. Browse original works from great 20th century artists, or learn how to mix the perfect martini. Take a lesson in watercolor painting, or try your hand at photography. For a traditional afternoon, take a break and head to the Queens Room for afternoon tea, where white-gloved waiters serving you fresh scones and English tea. Evenings also offer limitless experiences and myriad entertainment. The Empire Casino is waiting when you feel lucky, or try your hand at karaoke at the Golden Lion Pub.
Tipping Policy
During your voyage, you will meet staff throughout the ship who provide you with excellent service. Many more crew support those who serve you directly. A discretionary Hotel and Dining charge will be added to your shipboard account on a daily basis for each passenger (including children). This charge will be shared amongst all those who help provide and support your experience, including the waitstaff, stateroom stewards, buffet stewards, and others. Please note, this is a discretionary charge and should you wish to remove it or make any adjustments, you may contact the Purser’s Desk before the end of the cruise.

  • Grill Accommodations: $13.50 USD per person per day
  • Britannia Accommodations: $11.50 USD per person per day

Note: Casino dealers and Spa personnel do not share in the Hotel and Dining charge as not all guests utilize these services.

A 15% gratuity is added to your bar charges and dining room wine account. This is shared amongst the beverage staff and their support staff.

Charges may vary or change without notice.

Shipboard Policies
  • Pregnancy Policy
    Because onboard medical facilities are limited and shoreside medical care is not always readily available, Cunard Line will not be able to carry passengers who will be 24 weeks or more pregnant by the end of the intended voyage.

  • Smoking Policy
    The safety, comfort and enjoyment of all passengers has always been a key concern at Cunard. With this in mind, smoking is no longer permitted in any public area with the exception of Churchill’s Cigar Lounge and the upper level of G32. Pipe and cigar smoking is only permitted in Churchill’s Cigar Lounge and on the permitted open decks spaces.

    Smoking is not permitted in staterooms or on stateroom balconies.

    Electronic cigarettes may be used in staterooms and on stateroom balconies. However, they are not permitted in non-smoking public areas. Electronic cigarettes that emit a vapor should be used in designated smoking areas only.

  • Special Dietary Needs - Advance Notice Required
    If a passenger has special dietary needs, Cunard must be advised at time of booking or, at the latest, six weeks before sailing. Every effort will be made to comply with such requests.

  • Wheelchair Access & Special Needs
    All passengers requiring specific assistance, facilities, or equipment on board must advise Cunard Line at the time of booking, and are requested to complete a questionnaire after booking, to ensure they have all the information needed to cater adequately for your requirements.

    If you need to bring a wheelchair or mobility scooter on board with you, it is essential that you let Cunard Line know at the time of booking or as soon as the need is known. Any passengers requiring the use of a wheelchair, mobility scooter, or other aids to mobility must provide their own. For the safety of everyone on board and the ship, all wheelchairs, scooters and other aids to mobility, as is the case with all passenger possessions, must be stored inside your stateroom when not in use. Failure to comply with this important safety rule may mean you are disembarked and refused future travel. Part time wheelchair user traveling in a non-wheelchair accessible stateroom must bring a collapsible wheelchair to ensure it can safely fit through the stateroom door and be accommodated in the stateroom. It is not possible to make structural changes to the stateroom layout. Cunard Line reserves the right to require passengers who have booked this accommodation without legitimate reason to move, at their own expense, if necessary.

    Mobility scooters will only be permitted on board if passengers have booked into a wheelchair accessible stateroom, or a suite, as these are the only types of accommodations where mobility scooters can safely be stored. The minimum door width of suites is 53 cm (21 in). The minimum door width of the wheelchair accessible staterooms is 80 cm (31 in). At the time of booking, please let Cunard Line know if you intend on bringing a mobility scooter with you, and they will in turn provide you with a questionnaire for completion to ensure that the accommodation you have booked is appropriate. Please note that wheelchair accessible staterooms are strictly reserved for passengers who are bringing wheelchairs or mobility scooters or who have a requirement for the adapted facilities offered by these staterooms.

    A ship is not always the easiest environment for using a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Although the crew is helpful, they are only able to provide limited assistance to help you in moving around the ship. For this reason, and in order to ensure the safety of the passenger, the ship and all others on board, it is recommended that passengers with disabilities, who require personal assistance in the activities of daily living, including pushing a wheelchair or communication support, be accompanied by a personal assistant or traveling companion to provide these services. Blind/Visually Impaired passengers are recommended to travel with a companion who can help you get your bearings and assist you both on board and ashore. The crew can provide limited arm assistance, and information or directions, but cannot provide sustained or long term assistance.

    Please note that due to applicable safety requirements, the design of the ship or port infrastructure and equipment, in certain ports of call it may not be possible for Cunard Line to offer a shore excursion program, or shuttle bus service, suitable for passengers who are not able to board a coach via the steps with only the aid of their traveling companion.

    Cunard Line reserves the right to refuse passage to any Passenger who has failed to notify Cunard Line of their requirement for special treatment or assistance (including the requirement to use a wheelchair or mobility scooter ). For further information about traveling with disabilities, please contact the specialist Care Access Team at (800)728-6273 (Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm PT) or via email at accessoffice@cunard.com.

    Mobility Ashore

    When choosing your voyage please bear in mind that it may not be possible for wheelchair users to get ashore at ports of call. At the majority of ports visited by the ships, Cunard Line deploys a short ramped low-level gangway, commonly referred to as the ship’s brow. This is normally due to ports with a large tidal range, where a relatively shallow ramp may unavoidably become too steep to use safely during the course of the day with tidal movements. Some examples of ports with a large tidal range (but not an exhaustive list) are: Bilbão, Brest, La Coruña, Le Havre, La Rochelle, Lisbon, Vigo, Zeebrugge, Canary Island ports, Hamburg, Boston, Halifax, Portland, Québec, Darwin, Lisbon, Mumbai and San Francisco.

    At ports where it is not possible to use the ship’s brow, all access to shore will be by a narrow stepped gangway known as the accommodation ladder, that pivots to take account of the tide. When the accommodation ladder is in use, you will need some independent mobility in order to walk down the gangway. Each of the ships carries a wheelchair “stair climbing” machine which, where appropriate, may be used to allow wheelchair users to go ashore provided they transfer between their own wheelchair and the wheelchair that is fitted to the stair climber at the top and bottom of the accommodation ladder. The stair climber cannot be used with electric wheelchairs – these will need to be taken ashore separately.

    Service Animals

    Cunard is pleased to permit individuals to bring service animals on board. You must provide notice of the time of booking. Local laws or customs may prevent animals from disembarking at particular ports or countries. It is the passenger's responsibility to consult local customs authorities for requirements and to obtain all applicable documents and health certificates. Service animals are kept in staterooms with their owners.
