Kirkenes
Kirkenes 08/27/2024Your voyage begins in the Arctic in the town of Kirkenes, just a few miles from the Russian border—farther east than St. Petersburg and Istanbul! You'll likely notice that Norway's gigantic neighbor has many influences, from road signs in both Norwegian and Russian to a monthly Russian market and the World War II Russian Monument. For those interested in history, the Varanger Museum in Kirkenes has exhibits about how the town was involved during World War II, where it was bombed a total of 328 times in four years, making it the most bombed place during the war after Malta. For more insights into this somber period, visit the Andersgrotta World War II Bomb Shelter which could house up to 2,500 people underground. In the port of Vardø, you'll find the star-shaped Vardøhus Fortress, built in 1737. The northernmost fortification of any kind, it remains in use by the military to this day. We'll cruise Norway's coastline to the small port of Båtsfjord in the evening. Then it's on to Berlevåg. You might be able to make out Mount Tanahorn to the west, or see Kjølnes Lighthouse blinking atop its cliff overlooking the Barents Sea. Time in port: Kirkenes: 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, Vardø: 4:05 pm to 5:00 pm, Båtsfjord: 8:00 pm to 8:30 pm, Berlevåg: 10:25 pm to 10:35 pm., |

Tromso
Tromso 08/29/2024History and culture: This morning, we arrive at Harstad, where you can join one of the classic excursions — A Taste of Vesterålen. Discover history, beautiful scenery, and cultural heritage sites on this tour that rejoins the ship at Sortland. Those who stay on the ship experience a passage through the Risøyrenna, a shallow channel made for Hurtigruten in the 1920s. Lofoten and Trollfjord: Get ready now for some amazing scenery as we sail through the world-famous islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen. Lofoten is known for its natural beauty, steep mountains, wild nature, and picturesque fishing villages. Our daylight sailing route through the region is the voyage highlight for many. After a short stop at the tiny village of Risøyhamn, we continue to Stokmarknes — where Hurtigruten began more than 125 years ago. You can visit the Hurtigruten Museum here. Continuing south, it will look like we're headed into a mountain wall, but don't worry. We are in fact sailing through a passage into the narrow Raftsund, flanked by peaks rising 1,000 meters out of the sea. We now arrive at amazing Trollfjord. If conditions allow, we will sail between sheer cliffs that seem close enough to reach out and touch. It's an unforgettable experience! Next we arrive in Svolvær, where you can choose from several excursion options. Go horseback riding along a beach at sunset, head out on spectacular hikes, join a fast-boat tour on the fjord, or relax in town at one of many cafés, pubs, and restaurants. TIME IN PORT: Tromsø: 11:45 pm–1:30 am; Finnsnes: 4:20 am–4:40 am; Harstad: 8 am–8:30 am; Risøyhamn: 10:45 am–11 am; Sortland: 12:30 pm–1 pm; Stokmarknes: 2:15 pm–3:15 pm; Svolvær: 6:30 pm–8:30 pm; Stamsund: 10:15 pm–11:30 pm., |

Bodo
Bodo 08/30/2024Crossing the Arctic Circle is an important rite of passage. Today we celebrate the occasion on deck with a taste of Arctic tradition – a spoonful of cod liver oil. Sailing along the Helgeland coast, you see the strange mountain, Torghatten (258 meters above sea level), famous for the distinctive hole through its center. The hole is 160 meters long, 35 meters high and 20 meters wide, and was formed during the ice age. Participate on a hike up the mountain. Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountain range. It is easy to see how the peaks influenced ancient legend. The story goes that seven beautiful troll sisters were caught out at sunrise and turned to stone, thus creating the seven beautiful mountaintops. Next, we briefly stop at the idyllic trading post of Nesna before moving on to Sandnessjøen. From here, you can join an optional excursion to a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Vega Islands. The UNESCO World Heritage status is due to the unique centuries-old interaction between the islanders and eider ducks. Learn how the locals sustain a livelihood of making down-filled duvets. In Brønnøysund, join an excursion to the Norwegian Aquaculture Center for an informative tour and taste of fresh salmon, from April through October. Even though we're south of the Arctic Circle, there are still good chances to see the Northern Lights in winter. The Midnight Sun may not shine, but you still experience seemingly endless daylight during late spring and summer. Time in port: Bodø: 02:30 am to 03:30 am, Ørnes: 06:25 am to 06:35 am, Nesna: 10:25 am to 10:35 am, Sandnessjøen: 11:45 am to 12:15 pm, Brønnøysund: 3:00 pm to 5:25 pm, Rørvik: 9:00 pm to 9:30 pm., |

Tipping Policy
It is not common practice to tip on Hurtigruten ships on the coastal voyage, but if a guest feels that crew members should be rewarded for providing exceptional service, tip boxes and envelopes can be found in the restaurant.
-
Shipboard Policies
- Currency
Norwegian currency is used on board. Most major currencies may be exchanged. Visa, American Express, MasterCard, and Diners Card are all accepted. A cruise card can be obtained and used for payment for extras and settled at the end of your voyage. This may be subject to change. - Electrical
Electrical outlets on the vessel are 220v AC. – 2 pin Continental-type, for which an adapter is required. Guests needing an adapter/converter, must bring their own. - Language
Norwegian and English are the official onboard languages. The personnel at the reception and some of the service crew may also speak German. Tour Leaders speak Norwegian, English, and German. - Medical Emergencies
There is no doctor or pharmacy on board. However, officers are trained in first aid and can provide emergency medical assistance. The ships are also close to land. - Safety Information
Hurtigruten ships are working vessels operating a regular service to a set timetable. The ships carry goods, vehicles, and passengers between ports, by night and day, as an integral part of Norwegian daily life. Hurtigruten ships are calling at ports around the clock. It is a safety requirement that all Hurtigruten passengers attend a compulsory safety briefing in Bergen before the ship leaves port. After check-in, and prior to embarkation, please go to the first floor of the terminal building where the safety briefing will be given at regular intervals by Hurtigruten staff. This briefing will last between 10 – 15 minutes with the first taking place at 3:45pm (embarkation is from 4pm, also from the first floor). The talk will include a demonstration of how to put on a life jacket, and the instructions to be followed in the unlikely event of an evacuation or other emergency during the voyage. The briefing is compulsory for all passengers including those who have traveled with Hurtigruten on previous occasions. There will be an opportunity to ask questions if you have any concerns. Guests may embark immediately upon completion of the safety briefing. The last briefing will take place at 7:30pm. Guests arriving after this time will be required to attend a safety meeting on board at 8pm, before the ship leaves Bergen.
Please take time to familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures as shown in the cabins (there is a diagram on the cabin door and in public areas), and ask at reception if in doubt.
In many ports there may be a good deal of activity on the quay with cars joining/ leaving the ships, and/or goods being loaded or unloaded. Please be alert to such traffic when embarking and disembarking. Take care during winter months when it is icy underfoot, particularly on the outside decks and when disembarking the ship or alighting from coaches. Ice spikes and other winter clothing can be purchased in the ship's store. Do not carry large amounts of cash and keep valuable items, including mobile telephones and cameras, out of sight.
- Smoking Policy
Smoking is only permitted in designated areas on the outside decks. It is not permitted when the ships are in port and fueling. The staff will advise when it is not allowed to smoke outside. Smoking in the cabins is prohibited and subject to a fine. - Special Dietary Needs - Advance Notice Required
If you have special dietary requests, please inform Hurtigruten at the time of booking. They will do their best to meet such requests but cannot guarantee they will be able to do so. Special requests will not be accepted by Hurtigruten as part of the contractual agreement. Passengers on strict diets, such as vegan/vegetarian, may find that there is a limited choice. - Wheelchair Access & Special Needs
Hurtigruten is happy to welcome guests who are not fully mobile. All ships (except MS Lofoten) have at least one cabin equipped for travelers using a wheelchair. Guests who use a wheelchair must bring their own, standard sized, foldable chair. Guests who need assistance in order to get around may need to travel with a companion. Those who are able to navigate around the ship unaided in a wheelchair need not have a travel companion. Please discuss this matter with your booking agent. In mainland Norwegian ports there is a ramp for embarkation/disembarkation.
Excursions have not been adapted specifically for passengers with walking difficulties. Please contact Hurtigruten, or the Tour Leader once onboard, for additional information regarding suitable excursions . It is important that you notify Hurtigruten of special requirements at the time of booking so they may be able to make the necessary arrangements for you.
