Optional Private Excursions

Avoid the crowds and hustle and bustle associated with a group activity. For a memorable trip ashore, we invite you to consider a private shore excursion. Below are just some samples of the private shore excursions we can arrange for you. Let us personalize your experience!

City Tour and Metro ride – Half day
Discover Moscow’s finest attractions and historical landmarks. You start the tour in the heart of the city, the Red Square. Originally a commercial center, the Red Square has been at the very centre of Russian history since the 15th century, from Ivan the Terrible’s confession of his misdeeds in 1550, to great demonstrations, executions and the great parades of the Soviet Union’s military might.
The magnificent square encompasses an area of over 70,000 square metres and is bounded by other buildings that we will see from the outside such as the Kremlin walls, the Historical museum, the GUM departments stores and Saint Basil's Cathedral with its candy-colored domes. This cathedral was commissioned in 1552 by Ivan the Terrible to celebrate his conquering of Kazan. Lenin’s Tomb, the final resting place of Russia’s (arguably) most radical communist leader, is also in the square.
The tour continues towards Sparrow Hills, known as Lenin Hills, one of highest points in Moscow. From the observation platform, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the city. There will be a stop to see the outside of the refined New Maiden Convent. Founded in 1524, this is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, with 16 gilded domes. Many noble women, including Peter the Great’s first wife and his sister took vows and spent the rest of their lives in this convent, where they are also buried.
The tour does not end before having a ride on the very famous Metro of Moscow, visiting the oldest and most beautiful metro-stations such as: Novoslobodskaya, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, among others. These stations, built in the 30s, look like palaces richly decorated with marble, mosaic and semi-precious stones.

City Tour and Kremlin Tour with Territory & Cathedrals – Half day
This tour combines the classic sightseeing with the visit of the Kremlin and Cathedrals.
We start at the Red Square, which has been at the very center of Russian history since the 15th century. From Ivan the Terrible’s confession of his misdeeds in 1550, to great demonstrations, executions and the great parades of the Soviet Union’s military might, the Red Square has witness a great part of Russian history.
The magnificent square encompasses an area of over 70,000 square meters and is bounded by other buildings that we will see from the outside such as the Kremlin walls, the Historical museum, the GUM departments stores and Saint Basil's Cathedral with its candy-colored domes. Lenin’s Tomb, the final resting place of Russia’s (arguably) most radical communist leader, is also in the square.
This tour includes a visit of the Kremlin territory and Cathedrals. The fortified central complex holds cathedrals, palaces, government buildings, and some surprising, oversized remnants of the past. You might be surprised by how many ancient and magnificent structures one can see within the walls of the Kremlin: 15th century cathedrals (the coronation, wedding and burial place of early Russian rulers), the bell-tower, the Patriarch’s Palace, the Grand Kremlin Palace and of course the richest museum – the Armory (not included).
The Kremlin, as in centuries past, is the center of government in Russia and also the official residence of President Vladimir Putin, although he doesn't actually live there. But it's also the historic heart of Moscow and one of the city's most important and visited sights.

City Tour with Memorial Cosmonaut Museum and walk in VDNKh (All-Union Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy) - Half day
This tour will pass by the main sites of the city including the Red Square and Kremlin, Saint Basil's Cathedral, among others, but the focus will be on the aerospace history of Russia and the greatest achievements of the communism.
You will visit of the Memorial Cosmonaut Museum, which is located under one of Moscow's most iconic monuments: 'To the Conquerors of Space'. This is a 100m high titanium sculpture gracefully shaped as a rocket taking off.
The museum is packed with over 3,500 exhibits, showing the most important Russian and Soviet achievements in space exploration, from the launch of the first artificial satellite and the first manned space flight, to the first moonwalk. Among other highlights, you can see and sit inside Space Station Mir, together with a Soyuz Spaceship, a vehicle for research on the surface of the moon, landing apparatus, cosmonauts' space suits (including Gagarin's) and even sample food for the astronauts. The interiors are fantastically atmospheric and covered with constellations, star clusters and distant universes.
The tour continues walking around the formerly “VDNKH” and  now “VVTS” – All Russia Exhibition center. Once known as the Exhibition of the People's Economic Achievements, this vast exhibition ground was established in the time of Stalin to showcase the achievements of communism. The All-Union Exhibition of Agriculture designed in the 50s has become an original contribution into the capital’s city architecture. An exhibition city that had sprung to life near its northern border on a 136-ha area included ponds, parks, experimental plots, 250 constructions of all kinds. Each pavilion was distinguished for its own original features based on use in construction of the national motives. The gilded statues of the central fountain symbolizing 15 former republics, a great place for a picture!

This cathedral was commissioned in 1552 by Ivan the Terrible to celebrate his conquering of Kazan. Lenin’s Tomb, the final resting place of Russia’s (arguably) most radical communist leader, is also in the square.

Nowadays, the complex is also used for different exhibitions and in summer it becomes a quite popular place for roller-skaters, cyclists and families that want to enjoy the warm days outdoors.

Alternatively, each ship has a few computers for guest use; there are desktop machines in Russia and laptops in Europe that guests may use free of charge. The Internet connection functions via cellular service or satellite downlink, and there may be times when reception is not possible and/or when the connection is quite slow. All Viking ship interiors, staterooms, and verandas are non-smoking. Each ship has an outdoor smoking area, generally on the sun deck.

  • Special Dietary Needs - Advance Notice Required
Viking will make every effort to accommodate special dietary needs. Every meal has vegetarian options on the menu, and chefs are able to prepare low-salt or gluten-free cuisine. Guests requiring special diets, such as diabetic or low-cholesterol meals, must alert Viking Cruises one month prior to departure and inform the Maitre d’ when on board, and the chefs will make make reasonable efforts to fulfill these requests.

  • Wheelchair Access & Special Needs
Guests must report any disability requiring special attention while on their Viking Cruises itinerary to Viking at the time the reservation is made. All vessels and motorcoaches are equipped to European standards. Most transportation services, including the vessels and motorcoaches, are not equipped with elevators or wheelchair ramps. Viking will make reasonable attempts to accommodate the special needs of disabled travelers, but is not responsible in the event it is unable to do so nor is it responsible for any denial of services by vessel operators, air carriers, hotels, restaurants, or other independent suppliers. Viking cannot provide individual assistance to a vacation participant for walking, dining, getting on and off vessels, motorcoaches and other vehicles, or other personal needs. A qualified and physically able companion must accompany travelers who need such assistance and must assume full responsibility for their well being. The guest assumes the full risk of use and of any prohibitions imposed by vendors. Motorized scooters are not typically suitable on international cruises and cannot be accommodated.

Guests who have any medical, physical, or other special needs should contact Viking River Cruises directly at 1-877-668-4546 (1-877-66VIKING) with additional questions, and to obtain a copy of Viking's Policy Statement.
