Chan May

Chan May 04/09/2021

The port of Chan May serves as a gateway to the fascinating and historic city of Hue, scenically set along the Perfume River. From 1802 to 1945, this was the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty emperors. Numerous historic monuments from that period remain, including the massive walled Imperial City, built in the 19th century, that once housed the country's most extravagant temples and royal residences and was hailed as the center of politics, religion, and culture. Among the Imperial City's treasures are palaces, shrines, and the Forbidden Purple City, the emperor's home modeled after Beijing's Forbidden City. Hue is also renowned for its fine cuisine, a spicy, fresh, and tempting blend of refined small-plate creations—a legacy of its royal past—and rustic dishes. You will have ample time to explore this port today.,

At Sea 04/12/2021

Cruise the South China Sea today. Tucked among mainland China, Vietnam, and the Philippines, the South China Sea is one of the world's most important waterways. One-third of commercial shipping passes through these waters. It is a tradition that stretches back untold centuries, to when dynastic emperors and the barbarians who opposed them sailed their ships here. Still today, the beauty of these waters and the enriching destinations to which they lead are noteworthy.,

Sitka: Wild Coast Paddle and Cruise (8 Hours)
If you thrive on adventure, if you hunger for wild places and endless views, if you love to explore at whatever pace suits your mood; a full-day Wild Coast Paddle & Cruise will be the highlight of your time in Alaska.
There is no such thing as a “typical” Wild Coast Paddle & Cruise – like snowflakes, no two are the same – and your paddling guide will help to design a route plan that suits your preferences as well as it fits the day’s sea and weather conditions.  Your adventure will either begin or end with an exciting one-hour cruise aboard our sturdy transport vessel.  Use of the shuttle boat allows you to explore almost twice as much of the Sound in the same amount of time.
No matter what route we paddle, the scenery will be amazing.  Sitka Sound is bordered by hundreds of untouched coves, inlets and narrow passages, each containing their own secrets waiting to be discovered.  And the waters of the Sound are sprinkled with almost countless un-named islands and reefs.  This is the perfect sea kayaking environment, and you’re certain to explore some areas inaccessible by any other means.  Few activities can match the experience of gliding silently across the canopy of a kelp forest – the clear waters revealing views of undersea gardens and marine life, while seals bask on the rocks and curious sea otters poke their little flat heads as high as possible out of the water to get a better look at you.  There is also a very good chance of sighting steller sea lions or humpback whales.
At the half-way point in our voyage we’ll step ashore on a seldom visited island to stretch our legs, do a little beachcombing, and enjoy a delicious picnic lunch.  The total paddling time on our full-day exploration is 5-6 hours, in which time we’ll travel about 6-8 miles, depending on your preferences.  Although it’s not a strenuous activity, we recommend the full-day paddle only for those who are in good physical condition.

Ketchikan

Ketchikan 05/17/2021

Discover Alaska's "first city", as it is known to travelers coming by ship from the south. Ketchikan was home to the Tlingit long before the arrival of white settlers, as you'll see in the many old and new totem poles that grace the town. During a tour, walk in the footsteps of lumberjacks, fishermen, con artists, and ladies of the night in this once lawless frontier town, and embark an amphibious vehicle for a unique "Duck Boat" tour. If you'd like to venture beyond the town, visit Tongass National Forest and Misty Fjords National Monument, where seaplanes and 4x4 vehicles take you beyond the beaten path.,

Optional Private Excursions

Avoid the crowds and hustle and bustle associated with a group activity. For a memorable trip ashore, we invite you to consider a private shore excursion. Enjoy the undivided attention of your own driver/guide and the flexibility of experiencing the aspects of the local culture that most interest you. Below are just some samples of the private shore excursions we can arrange for you. Let us personalize your experience!

Ketchikan: Private Anan Creek Bear Tour - (4 hours)
Highlights:
Seeing bears in their natural habitat is a highlight of any trip to Alaska, but the opportunities are limited for cruising visitors—so we designed this private and exclusive adventure for you. Anan Creek is an ancient Tlingit native fishing site that has the largest pink salmon run in Southeast Alaska, attracting significant numbers of black and brown bears to feast on the bounty—it’s one of only a few places in the world where you can view both. Flying by private floatplane deep into Tongass National Forest, you’ll land on serene Anan Bay. From there, your naturalist guide will escort you on a half-mile hike along a boardwalk to a secure bear observatory overlooking a waterfall. From the viewing platform, you can look down on the fast flowing creek as it cascades towards the sea and large numbers of salmon head upstream to spawn. It’s no surprise that bears congregate here! Restricted access to the area, combined with interpretation by your bush pilot and guide, enhance this truly intimate experience.

Enjoy a gourmet camp meal of your own freshly caught fish served atop a saffron-infused, bouillabaisse-inspired stew. All fares and offers are for new bookings only, as of May 1, 2014, are subject to availability, may not be combinable with other offers except Viking Explorer Society Travel Credit and Referral Rewards Credit, are capacity-controlled and may be withdrawn at any time without prior notice.

Cruise fares listed are cruise only in U.S. dollars, per person, based on double occupancy. Cruise fares listed are valid for U.S. and Canadian residents only. Cruise ship fuel surcharge may apply. 2-for-1 fares are based upon published full brochure fares; cruise fares do not include pre-paid charges, optional facilities and service fees, and personal charges, as defined in the terms and conditions of the Passenger Ticket Contract. Full brochure fares may not have resulted in actual sales in all stateroom categories and may not have been in effect during the last 90 days. Promotional fares may remain in effect after the expiration date. Viking reserves the right to correct errors or omissions and to change any and all fares, fees and surcharges at any time. Please call for the most up-to-date prices, as pricing and availability may change at any time. The cruise ship fuel surcharge is additional revenue to Viking River Cruises, as are any additional charges relating to currency fluctuation other than for fully paid cruise fares and full fares, which fluctuations are beyond our control. Additional terms and conditions may apply. Complete terms and conditions may be found in the Passenger Ticket Contract.

All fares are quoted in US Dollars.
