Micato Safaris – Part 2

Larsen’s Tented Camp had all the comforts of home and more. The staff was fabulous and the food was delicious and we were all amazed by the beautiful presentation at every meal. My favorite feature was David the Samburu warrior who, armed with only a sling shot, was charged with the task of keeping the very persistent monkeys away from our food at meal time. I think he allowed a few to get by him for the pure entertainment value. We sure got a laugh out of it as one would run in and grab a roll or a piece of fruit right off the table before David shooed it away.

We stayed here for two nights. Each day included a morning and an afternoon game drive. The rides were fun and very bumpy. Tony told us when we first arrived that he would take us to animal heaven, but first he would shake the hell out of us. That was a true statement.

In the mornings, I could watch the sun rise right from my bed, with the tent flaps open and there was usually a monkey on the porch to greet me.

We also visited a Samburu village to learn about the customs and culture of the Samburu tribe. There was singing and dancing and even a few beautiful songs done by the children. We were welcomed into one of the villagers homes to see inside. The village is very primitive by our standards.

We were treated to our first surprise bush breakfast after our morning game drive. There is something magical about dining in the bush, next to the river, and it seems the food tastes better when eating outdoors–probably just all part of the magic.

Day 6 Off to the airstrip for our departure to Mount Kenya. After landing at Nanyuki Airstrip we were transported to the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club which is situated right on the equator. This is a fabulous property. We stayed in cottages that have two bedrooms (one on each side of a shared central living room area complete with fireplace).

In the evening, they would light the fireplace for you if you request it and also do the turndown service complete with a hot water bottle in your bed. The resort is beautiful, the grounds are impeccable and the view of Mt Kenya is gorgeous. We had tickets to visit the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and Animal Orphanage. It was an up-close and personal look at many different animals. We were able to interact with many of them as well. We were only here for one night, and we all wished for more. It was a nice change of pace sandwiched in between the two tented properties.

Day 7 Saying goodbye to Mt Kenya and heading to Ngerende airstrip with game viewing en route and then again once we arrived in the Mara en route to the Fairmont Mara Safari Club. Our drivers were so good at getting us up close and personal with the game. It was amazing!

Stay tuned for Part 3…
