Cancun and Riviera Maya

View from Barbara's RoomWe arrived on a charter flight from Los Angeles June 16th and were transferred to the Riu Palace Las Americas. It is a luxurious and elegant resort. It is a Spanish-style beachfront resort. We checked in and were upgraded to an ocean view room category that had 2 beds, a living room and balcony. They had a fully stocked mini bar and a 4 bottle liquor dispensary.

They have a children’s pool and an adult swim up bar pool that had a lot of daily activities.

The buffet is close to the pool area which offered, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

They have 5 speciality restaurants.

The food overall at the Hotel was excellent. The employees were very courteous and helpful overall.

On Monday we visited the Isla Mujeres Palace. In order to get to the resort we took a ferry over to the Island. We rented a golf cart and drove to the resort where we were met by the General Manager. We toured the hotel and the grounds then were told to use the faciltiies for the day. We enjoyed the food and the drinks.

The Isla Mujers Palace resort is an adult only resort, very quiet and tranquil. The rooms are modern and elegant.

The swimming pool was large and had a swim up bar. There is a nice beach, but had areas with grass growing in the water and great snorkeling nearby.

We took the ferry back to the mainland later in the day. The new Riu Palace Peninsula is right by the ferry so we decided to check it out. We had our wrist bands on from the Riu Palace Las Americas so we could use the facilities at the resort. The decor is very modern and upbeat. The color scheme is purple and silver.

The next day we checked out of the Riu Palace Las Americas and headed for Playa Del Carmen which is a 60 minute cab ride. .We checked into our next resort which was the Iberostar Tucan.

It had a very tropical feeling with thatched roofs and had a jungle in the middle of it.

The hotel rooms started up by the lobby and went all the way down to the beach. Some of the rooms had a jungle view, so you could see the monkeys hanging from the trees.

There was all kinds of wildlife. It is a great family resort. We had a ground floor beachfront room. There are 3 floors in each building and no elevators.

There are all kinds of daily activities at the resort, everything from water aerobics, zumba, volleyball to beach parties. There is never a dull moment if that is the kind of vacation you are looking for.

They had several specialty dining options and a buffet. The food was good with lots to offer. The main buffet was okay. I liked the beach buffet, it was close to our beach front room and quality of food was the same as the main buffet.

There was a tropical storm that came in and lasted 2 days. The Hotel did not offer umbrellas which was not a good thing since you had to walk back and forth to the Lobby area, unless you called to get the golf cart and they were very busy and the wait time was long.

It is about a 30 minute walk to the town of Playa Del Carmen or a 10 minute cab ride.

There was an Apple Vacations representative in the Lobby which was helpful if you had any questions about the transfers or outside activities.

I especially like being close to the town of Playa Del Carmen while visiting the Riviera Maya and would recommend staying in a hotel in the Playa Del Carmen area.

Overall it was an an excellent trip.
