Instead they're working in orphanages, building schools and teaching English. It's called volunteer tourism, or "voluntourism," and it's one of the fastest growing trends in travel today. Voluntourism is ultimately about the fulfillment of the volunteers themselves, not necessarily what they bring to the communities they visit.
A common motivation is to “make a difference” and to "achieve something positive for others" who are less fortunate than the volunteer.
People generally volunteer in order to increase their international awareness, to contextualize poverty and its effects, as an education opportunity, and to help people while having a morally rewarding experience. Many believe that the trip will change the way they think when they return home, others are just looking to give to back to others less fortunate.

Your ship sails from Miami on Sunday afternoon and will serve as a comfortable home base throughout your journey. You’ll spend Monday at sea before arriving in the Dominican Republic around midday on Tuesday. For the next three days, you’ll work alongside local people on projects that serve local community needs. On Friday afternoon, you’ll begin your return voyage to Miami.

The “essential services” volunteers provide are drawn from United Nations’ directives for appropriate, tangible and measurable assistance. The keys to our enduring success worldwide are partnership, development and you. While you’re making a difference in places like St. Lucia, Peru, Tanzania, Italy, Romania, India or in the Appalachian “hollers” of West Virginia, you’ll work with people of a different culture - who share your dreams, life’s goals and daily routines.
